ARTWORK ORIGINATION

‘The Majestic Side’ was created by Lucy to highlight the plight of the rhino. Rhinos are a species that continuously fall under threat due to human greed, negligence and corruption. At the time of creating this piece, Lucy was made aware of a mass poaching event; 23 rhinos were needlessly slaughtered for their horns in just 36 hours. Some of the rhinos who were killed were pregnant females or females who had young calves which were then orphaned.

This horrific event made Lucy even more determined to produce a piece that mimicked this species’ utmost beauty, strength, resilience and gentleness. Rhinos will not cause harm to humans unless absolutely necessary if threatened, yet they suffer brutally at the hands of humans and are at risk of being wiped out completely. The thought of killing such a majestic creature for money and power is a concept most people with compassion and love for animals struggle to comprehend.

Lucy collaborates with the organisation Helping Rhinos, donating 25% from every sale of an original or print in her rhino collection to their organisation. They partner with many projects to protect rhinos and their habitats in Africa, these projects include:

- Ol Pejeta Conservancy: home to the last two remaining Northern White Rhinos in the World, Najin and Fatu, who are also vital individuals in BioRescues’ project to save this species.

- The Black Mambas: the first all-female anti-poaching unit consisting of 36 young women, passionate for conserving their native wildlife, who patrol up to 50,000 hectares within Kruger National Park. These women act as role models for their local communities, inspiring the next generation of conservationists.

- ARCC (African Rhino Conservation Collaboration): provide planes to patrol and monitor rhino reserves from the sky. These aircraft can act as deterrents for poachers and criminals.

- Kariega Foundation: focuses on community education, and supporting K9 anti-poaching units.

- Zululand Rhino Orphanage: take in orphaned calves and raise them to be strong and healthy before releasing them into the reserves.

By purchasing one of these prints, you’ll not only be supporting an early-career independent artist, but you’ll also be making a positive contribution to rhino conservation.
